Masquerade balls were extended into costumed public festivities in Italy during the 16th century Renaissance . They were elaborate dances held for members of the upper classes, and were particularly popular in Venice and were also associated with the tradition of the Venetian Carnival. Amongst a sea of masked individuals, mysterious and illusive, how do we tell the real identity of the person behind the mask? We would never truly know, with or without the mask... life is after all, a big masquerade.
